Our Structure
PARTICIPATION: The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP) is an informal alliance of stakeholders who seek to protect patient safety globally and ensure patient access to safe and legitimate online pharmacies in accordance with applicable laws. ASOP has three categories of participation--Steering Group Members, General Members, and Observers. ASOP believes illegal online drug sellers pose a serious threat to patient safety. All participants are committed to ASOP's core principles and mission of protecting patient safety and ensuring patient access to safe and legitimate online pharmacies in accordance with all federal and state laws.
- Steering Group Members – Lead the development of ASOP’s mission; manage the execution of ASOP’s strategic objectives in policy, legislation, and education; and oversee governance decisions related to external communications and project expenditures.
- General Members – Actively participate and provide input to direct ASOP’s strategy and advise the Steering Group. All members -- both Steering Group and General -- have an equal voice. Decisions are made by consensus and no one has a veto.
- Observers -- Observe ASOP’s work and provide advice and information to ASOP members. In addition to facilitating transparency, Observers have the ability to participate in monthly coalition meetings, provide expertise and voluntary input, and exchange information that can help to inform ASOP’s work and their own efforts. Observers are not considered Members of ASOP and do not have a vote regarding coalition matters.
FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTORS: ASOP intends to have, and has consistently enjoyed, a broad base of direct financial and in-kind support from companies, nonprofit organizations, and trade associations. ASOP accepts contributions from its Steering Group Members, General Members, Observers, and unaffiliated supporters when their objectives are aligned with ASOP’s.
- Current direct financial contributors include Eli Lilly and Company, LegitScript, National Association of Chain Drug Stores, NeedyMeds, and Enforce the Act.
- In addition to direct financial support, ASOP could not be successful without substantial in-kind contributions. ASOP greatly values the in-kind contributions provided by its members, including donated media, consumer education resources and dissemination, campaign and key meeting sponsorships, donated conference fees, donated conference educational space, and the provision of legal, policy, and technical expertise from members and their teams. Current in-kind contributors include: American Pharmacists Association, Eli Lilly and Company, Enforce the Act, European Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines, International Pharmaceutical Federation, LegitScript, Men’s Health Network, National Association of Chain Drug Stores, NeedyMeds, and the Partnership at Drug-Free.org.
- ASOP also appreciates and relies upon consistent contributions of time, advice, and expertise from its Observers, including the provision of data, access to reports, expert review, and expert consultation regarding ASOP’s strategic and legislative objectives. These contributions are currently provided by: National Association of Boards of Pharmacies (NABP), National Health Council (NHC), Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), Partnership for Safe Medicines (PSM).
ASOP is managed by FaegreBD Consulting, who ensures coalition compliance with U.S. laws and requirements, including but not limited to federal Lobbying Disclosure Act and antitrust laws.
